One thing I love to do but don't get to do often these days is to read books, a relaxing yet stimulating activity to occupy my spar(s)e time in a pleasant way. Coming from a music background it's especially an interesting read when it's about an artist who has paved the way for me and countless others in one way or another (in this case, Hip Hop DJ's).

So a while ago I read about this book entitled "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats" in this article in NY Mag, but never got around to pick it up at the bookstore. Now I knew GM Flash was an eccentric cat (and I swear every other DJ I ever met is peculiar in a way) but I for one never knew Flash' backstory was this sad. The predictable recording business pitfalls aside, him being a basehead at the verge of OD'ing at his favorite crackhouse is... awkward.

This and many more interesting things to be read about in his memoir: "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats" by Grandmaster Flash and David Ritz, whose works also include biographies of legends such as Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye (Word is Ritz also assisted in creating Marvin's hit "Sexual Healing", but that's another blog entry). And oh yeah, the graffiti font on the cover is horrible lol.

Hong Kong's first and only museum devoted exclusively to contemporary art is about to open it's doors. Located on the 2nd floor of DNM in the famed Causeway Bay area you can find a good 7,500 square feet of space dedicated to both international and regional contemporary art exhibitions, educational programs and arts inspired social events.

Among one of the first artists to exhibit art at MOCA China is legendary graffiti artist Eric Haze, who will be bringing his Full Circle show to the MOCA from July 24th til August 8th. Opening reception is July 23rd. Full Circle has been a year in the making and features 15 drawings in mostly charcoal and pastels, 15 large-scale hand painted acrylic canvases, 10 archival silkscreen prints and several standalone one-off pieces. Never afraid to innovate, Radiohead once again step it up an unusual notch or two by shooting their next video (House of Cards) not with cameras, but with lasers (?!?!).

"House of Cards", directed by James Frost of Zoo Films, was created utilizing two technologies: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne Lidar. The Geometric Informatics scanning system employs structured light to capture detailed 3D images at close proximity, and was used to render the performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead and several partygoers. The Velodyne Lidar system uses multiple lasers to capture large environments in 3D, in this case 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute, capturing all of the exterior scenes and wide party shots. Geometric processed their own data while 510 Systems processed the Velodyne Lidar data. The data was then manipulated by Union Editorial and the Syndicate to create the final result.

Not sure if I understand what that's all about, but I do know I can't wait to see this one. More images and information (sort of) over at Deadairspace when they feel like it.
